 29th Nov 2021

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was among the State Commissions that had a stand at the Seventh and Final Annual Devolution Conference at the Makueni Boys High school in Wote town, Makueni County.

The Commission stand, which was branded in the IEBC corporate colours, had the staff engage with delegates as they inquired on the electoral process. The Commission used the opportunity to interact with the voters and other Kenyans and carried out voter registration and voter transfer services.

“All that was required to be registered was a national identity card or valid Kenyan passport. Voters also used the opportunity to confirm their Registration Status,” said Makueni Constituency Election Coordinator Lango Ibrahim Guyo.

The Devolution Conference 2021 was a first county-led climate summit whose theme focuses on climate change, specifically the Multi-Level Governance for Climate Action. It offered a key platform through which National and County Governments come together, reflect, evaluate, and benchmark their performance on policy and implementation, the legislative framework, accountability, and service delivery.

Conference is serves as an opportunity for the two levels of government to demonstrate commitment and rededicate to co-operate and work together to achieve the dream of devolution. It was officially opened by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

As part of the containment measures against Covid-19, all delegates were required to present certificates of vaccination in order to gain access to the venue as directed by James Ongwae, the Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors.

Among the thousands that flocked the Commission stand was Narok Governor Samuel Ole Tunai, who paid a courtesy call to inquire about the electoral process.

“You are doing a great job to enlighten the ordinary Kenyan voters. I am happy with what I have been shown and answers to the questions I had,” said Governor Tunai.

There was also a delegation from the Tana River County led by Mohamed Dube, the CECM for Public Service, Administration and ICT who were welcomed at the Commission stand by Makueni Constituency CEC Lango Ibrahim Guyo and were appraised on the electoral process.

This year’s conference marked the end of the first dispensation of devolution and future conferences will be held once every two years from 2022. Delegates agreed to host the event on a two-year period to allow County Governors enough time to fully implement resolutions settled on during the preceding Devolution Conferences.

Commission Staff at the stand to serve the public were Salim Bilali the CEC Mbooni Mr. Guyo and Kaiti Constituency CEC Justus Nzomo, Jeniffer Ivyui, CAA Makueni and Franscis Waitah David, CAA Kibwezi West. In attendance from the headquarter were a Communication team, Corporate Affairs Manager Tabitha Mutemi and Communication and Public Affairs Manager Purity Karimi Njeru.
