IEBC Meets JLAC to Deliberate on Electoral Legal Reviews

The Commission met with members of the Justice and Legal Committee (JLAC) to deliberate on issues of referendum law, election finance campaign laws and boundaries delimitation. The workshop which took place from 17th to 19th March, 2019 was supported by Electoral Law and Governance Institute for Africa (ELGIA).

On February 12th, 2019 IEBC launched the 2017 Post Election Evaluation Report which highlighted some of the legal challenges experienced by the Commission in the run up to the 2017 General Election and the Fresh Presidential Election. It is in this backdrop that the Commission has resorted to start the process of reviewing governing laws and regulation in an effort to better management of future elections.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati in his remarks during the workshop pledged to work closely with legislators and other election stakeholders to ensure the Country has the relevant electoral laws in place to deliver on transparency and credibility of the electoral processes.

Hon. William Cheptumo, the Chairperson of JLAC lauded the Commission's effort to start reviewing the electoral laws in time to avoid last minute amendments that cause confusion and have negative impact on the electoral processes. The meeting was attended by JLAC Chairman and members, IEBC Chairman, Commissioners Prof. Adbi Guliye and Boya Molu, Ag. CS/ CEO Marjan H. Marjan and several members of the secretariat from the Commission and the National assembly.
