IEBC Presides over Eldama Ravine Day and Boarding Primary School Student Council Elections

IEBC through its Eldama Ravine Constituency Office successfully conducted Eldama Ravine Day and Boarding Primary School student council elections on 28th February, 2019.  The school is a public mixed primary school located in Baringo County that offers both day and boarding mixed schooling for it’s over 600 pupils. For the first time in the school’s history, students exercised their democratic right to vote during the school’s leadership elections supervised by both teachers and parents with assistance from IEBC.

Eldama Ravine Constituency Returning Officer (RO), Peter Kuria, and his Constituency Administrative Assistant (CAA), Gilbert Olekitirne, embarked on conducting the election as a means to educate pupils, teachers and stakeholders on how IEBC plans and executes election with an aim of fostering ideal democratic principles and good working relationships with stakeholders in the society while enhancing public trust and confidence in the Commission. Teachers played the role of clerks while IEBC officials took the positions of Presiding, Deputy Presiding Officers.

The school had 6 elective positions namely:
-School President
-Deputy President
-Welfare
-Health & Environment
-Games & Sports
-Entertainment

The school’s Head Teacher, Joseph Kingori said the election provided an opportunity for pupils to elect their preferred president and students’ council adding that, “Democracy should not be imposed on the people but nurtured. We nurture democracy from primary school. We want a society free of corruption and election malpractices.”

The election took place peacefully and in an orderly manner which resulted in a free, fair and credible election that was accepted by all students.
