IEBC Presides over Oaklands Junior School Elections
 28th Jun 2019

On January 25th, 2019 IEBC through its Subukia Constituency Office conducted Oakland's Junior School Elections. The elections provided the Commission an opportunity to expose the students to the electoral process and educate them on the importance of democracy, good governance and the role the Commission plays in Kenyan elections.

Preparations for the elections commenced with a sit-down with all stakeholders invested in the elections: School Administration, Teachers, Candidates and Students (voters). The sit-down provided a great opportunity for IEBC officials to conduct voter education sessions with students, teachers and the school administration. The stakeholders were taught how to mark ballot papers, how to cast ballot paper, the role of poll officials during elections and the need for democracy and good governance in the Country. Candidates were also briefed on what is expected of them before and during the elections.

On the day of elections, IEBC officials brought election materials to the school, setup class rooms as polling stations and a tallying center. The school had nine elective positions:
-President
-Minister for Academics
-Ministers for Dormitories
-Minister for Entertainment
-Minister for Interior Security and Coordination
-Minister for Sports
-Minister for Environment
-Minister for Dining
-Minister for Health

The total number of voters in the elections was 84; teachers played the role of presiding officers while IEBC officials played the role of observers and returning officer. At the end of the voting exercise, the votes were tallied, results forms filled and results formally announced and displayed. Certificates were then issued to those who won the elections. The elections carried on peacefully with no hindrances, two candidates however, disputed the results after counting, the dispute was later overruled as the two candidates had already been disqualified during the nomination process.
