IEBC Presides over Tabasamu SACCO Elections
 24th May 2019

On 30th March, 2019 IEBC conducted election for Tabasamu Savings and Credit Co-operative (SACCO). Tabasamu Sacco Society Limited was registered on 18th February, 1977 under Co-operatives Societies Act (Cap 490) of the laws of Kenya as a savings and credit co-operative society. Members of the Society are drawn from teachers, government ministries, parastatals, non-governmental organizations and the private sector. Currently the Society has nearly 4,000 active members and almost all members have accounts in the FOSA.

The SACCO wrote to the Kwale IEBC County Office seeking assistance with preparations for their election, citing the need for free, fair and credible election. A team comprising of the Returning Officers for Matuga, Kassim Kaema, and Msambweni, Yusuf Mohamed, embarked on presiding over the elections by providing strategic and non-strategic materials, conducting voter education, monitoring campaigns and training election officials.

The election had two elective positions namely: Tsimba Tiwi Board Member and Kinango/Samburu Supersoul Member. The Tsimba Tiwi Board Member election resulted in a tie and a re-run was recommended; and will take place at a later date. Over 100 votes were recorded for this position. Only one candidate was successfully vetted for the position of Kinango/Samburu Supersoul Member as per the Cooperative Society regulations. The Candidate was therefore un-opposed to the ballot; and was hence declared the duly elected member.

Such exercises are important to the Commission as they foster ideal democratic principles and good working relationships with stakeholders in the society while enhancing public trust and confidence in the Commission.
