IEBC presides over Silibwet High School Elections

IEBC through its Kuresoi South Constituency office offered support in the administration of student council elections at Silibwet High School on 20th June 2019. The Kuresoi South Constituency is one of the eleven constituencies within Nakuru County. It is the furthest constituency West of the County, with a voting population of 55,661 people (2017 GE Data) and four county assembly wards namely Keringet, Tinet, Kiptahich and Amalo. Silibwet High School is a public school located within Keringet Ward with a student population of 210.

The elections had six elective positions namely: Chairperson, Games Secretary, Environment Secretary, Dining Hall Secretary and Class Secretary for Forms 1 and 2 classes. A number of positions were unopposed (only one candidate contestants) consequently as per the school's election laws the unopposed candidates were issued with certificates.
The position of Dining Hall Secretary was the most contested position and attracted six (6) candidates. Noticeably, there was a tie between the two candidates contesting for the position; John Kigen and Philemon Ngeno. As per the rules of elections there was a re-run. In the re-run Philemon Ngeno carried the day. The school administration with help from IEBC customized the ballot papers, polling station results forms and other administrative forms for the purpose of the elections.

The team from IEBC took the opportunity to carry out voter education on students and the schools administration regarding election operations and processes in Kenya. Students and teachers were briefed on the eve of elections on what was expected of them using an interactive Q&A session that led to tremendous interaction with students on matters of election in Kenya.
