Wajir West By-Election Preparations in Top Gear

The Commission, on 25th April, 2019, will conduct the Wajir West Constituency by-elections, which were occasioned by a decision by the Supreme Court on 18th January, 2019 ordering fresh election in the constituency citing irregularities at Qara polling station. The constituency is one of six constituencies in Wajir County. It has five County Assembly Wards and covers an area of approximately 9,764.3 square kilometers with 27,544 registered voters and 75 polling stations (2017 GE Data).

 

Preparations in the constituency are in top gear, as the team concluded a four-day rigorous training of trainers (ToTs) who will cascade the training to the next level of Presiding Officers (POs), Deputy Presiding Officers (DPOs) and Clerks. The training was undertaken by master trainer, Habiba Godana, who is the Returning Officer for Central Imenti and Mohamed Aress , the Bura Constituency Returning Officer. The training was also attended by TOTs, two Deputy Returning Officerss and the county ICT Officer. The next level of POs and DPOs training will be held from 16th - 19th April, 2019 and thereafter the training of polling clerks will commence.

On the first day of training the trainees were taught the roles and responsibilities of elections officials, role of the stakeholders and purpose of both strategic and non-strategic election materials. The second day of training involved simulation of the voter identification procedure on the KIEMS kit, showing them exactly how to identify voters using their biometric and alphanumerical data. They were also taken through the polling, closing and counting procedures of the election process.
