The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), led by Deputy Commission Secretary - Support Services, Obadiah Keitany, MBS, met the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) to discuss three significant bills currently under consideration: The Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2024; the Election Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2024; and the Political Parties (Amendment) Bill, 2024. These bills are at the Committee stage, with various stakeholders invited to provide their insights.
Key issues discussed included: review of the term commission nomination to registration of candidates for elections and reinforcing the Commission's constitutional mandate to hear and determine pre-election disputes.
The discussions also covered the review of the election results management process and election legal timelines, emphasizing that the approval and certification of symbols for independent candidates remain the exclusive preserve of the Commission. Additionally, the IEBC highlighted judicial decisions impacting key electoral processes such as the mandate of the Dispute Resolution Committee and the Election Code of Conduct.
