IEBC Meets Swedish Ambassador to Discuss Legal Reforms and Election Preparedness
 21st Nov 2023

The Commission Secretary/CEO, Marjan Hussein Marjan, together with Directors Moses Sunkuli, Lorna Onyango and Chrispine Owiye, held a meeting with the new Swedish Ambassador to Kenya Caroline Vicini at the Swedish Embassy in Nairobi and discussed areas of collaboration, including electoral reforms and election preparedness on 28th September, 2023.

Marjan told Vicini that the Commission, among others, has over time facilitated electoral legal reforms, voter registration, voter education and related activities, deployment of technology and boundaries delimitation. “The Commission made deliberate efforts to have in place a robust electoral legal framework for the conduct of elections by generating and reviewing election-related legislations and submitting the same to Parliament for consideration,” said Marjan.

The CEO added that in the run up to the 2022 General Election, the Commission held several voter education activities and stakeholder engagements and, specifically, met with Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) of the National Assembly to deliberate on electoral issues. However, despite a raft of challenges that affected its operations, the Commission, through the basket fund (UNDP), received funding to support its processes.

Marjan recommended for immediate enactment of a robust legal framework to facilitate citizens living outside Kenya to participate in electoral processes.
