IEBC Presides Over MMTVC Student Council Election
 17th May 2019

On 21 February, 2019 the Narok East IEBC Constituency office was invited by the Maasai Mara Technical & Vocational College (MMTVC) to oversee the preparation and conduct of their student council election. MMTVC is located in Eor-Ekule Shopping Centre, 15Km from Narok Town, with a student population of 620.

The Narok East CEC, Christine Otieno and her CAA, Sylvester Kiragu, took on the task of presiding over the student council elections in the College. The Dean of students together with his team of students played a crucial role in the preparations and ensuring that the processes went on smoothly. The college also brought in security to maintain law and order during the voting period. This was occasioned by an incident experienced during their first election that resulted in it being called off.

Nomination of the candidates was done by the school in line with their governing elections Constitution. All those who sought nomination were expected to be enrolled students and must have been in the college for at least a semester. Candidates submitted their names to the Dean of Students for vetting to ensure they were of good character and discipline. Those that did not meet the requirements were disqualified from contesting.

Students were allocated a week to campaign and sell their manifestos to their fellow students in a bid to get elected. On the final day of campaigns, students gathered in Kamukunjis to be addressed by contestants. The election had 13 elective positions, five of which went un-opposed. They included: President, Secretary General, Finance, Internal Affairs, Club and Societies Entertainment, Information and Education.

Class representatives were assigned roles as polling clerks in the elections. 540 students participated in the election. Voting started at 8.30 am and ended at 2.30pm. Counting of votes commenced at 2.40pm and ended at 7.30pm, when the winners were declared and issued with certificates for the different elective posts. The election losers accepted the verdict. The institution thanked and congratulated the Commission on conducting a credible and peaceful election.
