IEBC Shines at Gilgil Hills Academy Students Council Elections

For the second year consecutively, the Commission through its IEBC Gilgil office conducted elections for the student council at Gilgil Hills Academy on Valentine's day, 14th February, 2020. The elections were conducted in line with our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to foster a culture of democracy and good governance in schools.

The elections were conducted in line with our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to foster a culture of democracy and good governance in schools.

Gilgil Hills Academy is located in Gilgil town and is among the top performing schools in Nakuru County. The Academy has a population of 1,220 pupils and is a conglomerate consisting of three (3) schools namely: Gilgil Hills Boys Boarding, Gilgil Hills Girls Boarding and Gilgil Hills Day School.

Before the election day, IEBC Officials conducted voter education sittings with students and teachers to educate them on the importance of good leadership, Kenyan election process, how to conduct campaigns, the roles of elections officials and how to mark ballot papers.

The candidates in the student's council elections contested for various positions including that of Presidency for each of the three schools and Governors for each class from class 4 to 8.

The exercise was conducted peaceful and those who lost in the elections quickly and humbly accepted the results. Results declaration and issuance of certificates ceremony was held in the presence of the School Director, administration, teachers and the entire pupil fraternity. The media led by Mt. Kenya TV live coverage, K24 and KTN provided coverage for the event. The three elected Presidents were also given an opportunity to address the gathering to give their victory speech. The well-known school's band provide kept the gathering entertaining during the procession.

Polling officials for the elections included; the Returning officer, Mr. Nguthu J M (CEC Gilgil), DRO, Mr. Kamau (CAA Gilgil), Teachers who acted as POs, DPOs and clerks and the School's administration, non-teaching staff and media formed the team of observers.

As a way of engaging our stakeholders and the society at large, school's elections continue to give us an opportunity to showcase our professionalism in handling elections with the hope that future generation will have a better understanding of the processes thereby reducing mistrust and enhancing public confidence in the Commission's ability to conduct free, fair and credible elections.
