 2nd Apr 2024

The Commission took part in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Conference for Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs) in Africa that was organized by Yiaga Africa in Nairobi on 16 March 2024.

The Commission Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Marjan Hussein Marjan, MBS, shared insightful perspectives on the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by EMBs.

In his presentation, Mr. Marjan emphasized the practical applications of AI that the Commission employed during the 2022 General Election including voter registration to avoid deduplication of voters, and use of mobile applications aimed at providing electoral related information with the aim of empowering voters to make informed decisions.

The CEO underlined the important collaboration the Commission has forged with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) that led to creating a social media monitoring tool powered by AI that monitored instances of hate speech.

In addition, the Commission partnered with META to address misinformation and disinformation. Marjan's presentation underscored the need for capacity building and accountability of EMBs as they embrace AI in order to enhance efficiency.
