The Commission’s Malindi Constituency Office conducted the Malindi Little Angels Junior School Students Council Elections on 19th June, 2024. |
The school, which is located in Shella Ward, one of the five wards in the constituency had reached out to the Commission to oversee the conduct of its students’ poll, which the IEBC Malindi Constituency Office agreed to. |
Little Angels is a day mixed private school with a total population of 543 pupils - 276 Girls and 267 Boys. The elections were for grade four (grade 4) to grade eight (grade 8) classes. |
Malindi Constituency Assistant Elections Officer Moureen Taabu, who served as the Returning Officer, conducted a series of meetings with the School Elections Committee in the build up to the elections to plan on what materials and personnel are needed. This was besides her conducting voter education sessions and mapping out the polling stations. |
“The students, teachers and parents were taken through voter education session where the RO emphasized on qualities of a good leader, roles of election officials, how to correctly mark a ballot paper, elections materials, and the general mandate of the Commission,” said Taabu. |
The School Elections Committee was mandated to carry out nomination and vetting of candidates, oversee the students’ campaigns, which were done after classes, play time and during school assemblies. |
There were four candidates who were cleared and presented for the presidential race. Other positions vied for were Cabinet Secretaries for health, debate, religion, games, environment, sanitation, dining hall and time keeper. The voter turnout on the election day was at 99.9 per cent. |
Suheil Amir was elected as the new school President with Naizal Khalfan picked as her deputy. The teachers served as Presiding Officers, Deputy Presiding Officers and clerks. |
