Commission Chair Mr. Chebukati assures religious group that electoral body will manage elections to the satisfaction of all

Nairobi, 23rd August, 2018

The Unfungamano Joint Forum of Religious Organizations (U-JFRO) has called for measure to ensure that elections are peaceful and not disruptive. Speaking during a consultative meeting with IEBC, Bishop Boniface Adoyo, a trustee of U-JFRO, said “the country goes through difficult times during and after elections. Things need to change, even if it requires a referendum”

The team of religious leaders, which comprised trustees and council members, discussed a number of proposals for change on elections and governance with IEBC Commissioners and senior members of the secretariat.

IEBC’s Chairman, Mr. Chebukati, said the electoral body is committed to demonstrate independence and accountability in the way it carries out its duties despite the threats to disrupt the independence of the institution. He vowed to carry out elections “to the satisfaction of even the losers”. Mr. Chebukati urged religious organizations to support IEBC in its voter education initiatives.

The views given by U-JFRO will be incorporated in the Post Election Exercise process due to be concluded by the end of September, 2018. Led by their Co-Chair Rasmin Chitnis, the U-JFRO team asked IEBC to exercise their independence to support positive change.
